Most of us have days when we don’t feel like getting out to exercise – days when being a couch potato, or popping out to the pub seems more appealing. But if you’re preparing for a marathon or another race then you need to find ways to stay motivated to ensure your training stays on track to reach that end goal. The next time the couch or pub calls you, follow our five top tips to success when training for a big event.
1. Set smaller goals
Whether your end goal is a marathon, triathlon or fun 5k run for charity, breaking a big goal into smaller goals can really help. Having a target in mind for each event you’re planning on doing, even if it is just to complete a certain distance without breaking, will definitely give you a sense of accomplishment. It could even be running a little bit faster or further than last time. Whatever it may be, hitting a goal every time you train will help you to stay motivated as you work towards that bigger goal.
2. Train with friends
There is nothing more motivational than being with people who have a common goal. Finding a local fitness club or gathering some friends or family to run with you can make every session both easier and more enjoyable. You can never underestimate the social side of exercise; after all, it is one of the most common reasons people start and carry on doing it.
3. Keep track of your progress
Completing a training log can go a long way towards motivating you to continue. Looking back at previous entries will serve as a reminder of how far you have come, which will encourage you to keep challenging yourself to give nothing but your best. On those inevitable down days, never forget where you started.
4. Remember the health benefits
Don’t lose sight of the health benefits that come with exercise – it’s good for you. Whether you’re looking to shed a few pounds or improve your overall fitness, it gives back what you put into it.
5. Look to other health and fitness people for inspiration
Think about the athletes you most look up to. There are many influential people in health and fitness who have written books or write regular blogs about how they have achieved their success. If there are some that have inspired you, read about them and see what you can take from their experiences and incorporate it into your own training.
